Call for Contributors: Global Sign Language Video Collection

Project Context

The International Day of Sign Languages, established by the United Nations General Assembly and celebrated annually on September 23, aims to highlight the crucial role of sign languages in safeguarding the human rights of people with hearing impairments. This day not only raises public awareness of the contributions made by the deaf community and the challenges they face, but also actively promotes linguistic diversity and cultural inclusion.

This year, Beijing Normal University, in collaboration with ALESCO (Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization), and other partners, is launching the “One World, One Love – Global Sign Language Video” initiative during the International Day of Sign Languages.

This initiative aims to spread peace and love by bringing together the sign language community to video record the sentence “Different languages, but same love” in their own sign language.

All video records will be compiled into a global digital sign language video, which will be released simultaneously on global platforms during International Sign Language Week 2026, showcasing the beauty of sign language, the bridge of communication, and the spirit of inclusion.

Upload Conditions

  • Record in landscape format (16:9) with a minimum resolution of 1080p.
  • Frame the participant from the waist up, centered, and looking at the camera.
  • Use a simple background and good lighting, with no subtitles, visual effects, or background music.
  • Follow the required sequence: self-introduction, initiative message, then a 3-second closing love gesture freeze frame.
  • Accepted formats are MP4, MOV, and AVI only, with a maximum size of 500 MB.
  • Name the file using the format Country_Name_SignLanguageCode.
  • Required information: full name, country or region, sign language used, and contact details, with an optional short bio.

Video Recording Guidelines

Please strictly follow the sequence below. No post-editing is required, as the organizers will compile all approved materials and add bilingual subtitles (original sign language transcript plus English translation).

Part 1: Self-introduction
In your national sign language: My name is (full name or sign name), and I am from (country).
Part 2: Initiative message
Please express one of the following two statements in your own sign language:
  • Option 1: Different languages, same love.
  • Option 2: Different languages, shared humanity.
Part 3: Closing freeze frame
Use the International Sign gesture for love, hold it for 3 seconds, look at the camera, and smile.
Shooting Requirements
  • Record in landscape format (16:9) with a minimum resolution of 1080p.

  • Use a simple background and clear lighting, with no subtitles, effects, or music.
  • Accepted formats are MP4, MOV, and AVI only, with a maximum size of 500 MB.
